This morning we rode early early in Scottsdale to beat the heat (didn't quite work), and along with a fun little ride, we also learned a lot about cactus. First and foremost, don't touch any plant in the desert. You might think it looks soft and furry but it will tear your skin like tissue paper! Second: My parents taught me that if I ever got lost in a desert (not likely on Vancouver Island, but hey, you never know) to slice open a cactus because there is water inside. Lies! All Lies! Only Prickly Pear cactus have edible moisture inside of them, the others don't have much and what they do have is so alkaline that you'd get more dehydrated trying to eat it. Third: Cactus only grow a foot every decade. Those big cactus in the desert are over 200 years old! So there you go. Did you expect to learn so much tuning into the Ride Guide website? I didn't think so...
