Surfing has got to be the most humbling sport ever created. I surf from time to time, and I'm always amazed at how difficult and different it feels from every other board sport out there. Sure, you'd think being a pro athlete might give me some advantage, but I don't think any of the skills I've honed on my bike over the years transfer even the least bit to surfing...well, maybe the balance does... but it sure doesn't feel like it!
Today Hoots and I got a surf lesson from Goofy Foot surf school in Lahina, Maui. Tim, our instructor and official "stokebroaker" at the school helped us become one with the waves and feel way more at ease on our boards so instead of thrashing, we just floundered a bit. It was amazing! The same feeling of freedom and "in the moment'' that makes biking so special was just as satisfying on a surfboard and after a little instruction from Tim, Hoots and I are hooked. So hooked in fact that we are waking up before 7am (a rare thing) to go out for a morning pre-bike surf. On that note...I'm off to sleep. Zzzzzzz.
